The Heat Is On for Turkeys & Drivers, CDOT Warns
If you will be drinking alcohol over this coming Thanksgiving holiday weekend, do not get behind the wheel of your vehicle, officials at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) are now warning motorists.
If you do, you will be risking a drunk driving arrest, CDOT has noted, as authorities from the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) – along with heightened DUI patrols from 102 local law enforcement agencies – will be out over the next four days looking to arrest allegedly impaired motorists.
As CSP Chief Col. Scott Hernandez has elaborated:
Thanksgiving is synonymous with travel, so it’s vital we keep Colorado’s roadways safe and free of impaired drivers…If you choose to drink this Thanksgiving, make sure you have a designated sober driver, or plan to use alternative transportation.
The Facts about Thanksgiving DUIs: What Drivers Should Know
Taking a look at the following facts about Thanksgiving DUIs can reveal just why Colorado law enforcement authorities are so intent on cracking down on impaired motorists over this holiday:
- The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is one of the most prominent alcohol drinking days of the year.
- From Thanksgiving through Christmas, the incidence of drunk driving accidents on U.S. roads substantially increases.
- Although the rates of Thanksgiving DUI arrests in Colorado have been decreasing in recent years (dropping from 411 drunk driving arrests in 2013 to 329 arrests in 2014), during the average year in Colorado, hundreds of people still end up being detained for alleged drunk driving.
