How to Avoid a New Year’s DUI

How to Avoid a New Year’s DUI

As Coloradans prepare to ring in the New Year tonight, officials at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) are urging them “to make responsible decisions if celebrating by drinking alcohol” this evening. To facilitate responsible decisions tonight, CDOT is once again rolling out Plan Ahead Colorado, a program that offers free rides via “RTD bus, mall and light rail routes throughout the Denver area.”

Stated in 2008, Plan Ahead Colorado is a “New Year’s Eve partnership” between CDOT, the RTD and Coors Light. Its central theme and message to motorists is Put Your Keys on Ice. Over its 8 years in existences, this program has reportedly given out about one million free rides to people in Denver.

Additional information about routes, schedules and rides for Plan Ahead Colorado is available here. This information can also be obtained by texting RIDE to 90464 or by calling 1-800-FREE-RIDES.

Other Options for Avoiding a New Year’s DUI Arrest

If you will be celebrating New Year’s Eve outside of Denver or are unable to take advantage of the free rides offered by this program for any reason, here are some other options for avoiding a DUI arrest tonight (and at any point in the future):

  • Find a sober driver. This could be a friend, a taxi driver, or a ride share driver. If you and some friends are all looking for rides, consider pooling some funds to hire a car service or limo for the evening. It may be more than you want to spend, but the expense can be worth it if it helps you avoid a DUI arrest.
  • Find somewhere to stay. If you can’t stay with a friend or someone who lives near the party, book a room at a nearby motel or hotel. While the rates may be more expensive (especially for last-minute bookings), they will, again, be less than the cost of a DUI conviction.
  • Ring in the New Year at (or close to) home. If you can’t work out a ride or somewhere to stay, it may be time to consider a change of plans and keep the party at (or near) home. While this may be less exciting than your other plans, it can guarantee that you avoid kicking off 2016 behind bars and facing DUI charges.
