Running from Sept. 11th through Oct. 26th, this DUI crackdown is focused on reminding motorists that there are various options for rides and that officers will be focused on targeting motorists who still choose to get behind the wheel when drunk or impaired by drugs.

“CDOT’s The Heat Is On campaign helps keep Coloradans safe from those that act irresponsibly and put others at risk,” Darrell Lingk, Director of the CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety, has explained about this effort.

Chief of the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Col. Scott Hernandez, also noted the importance of this DUI crackdown, explaining that:

With the arrival of fall, we tend to see an increase in impaired driving due to alcohol-related events like Oktoberfest and football season, among other factors… We realize people want to have a good time, and that is fine, but drinkers must be responsible and never get behind the wheel impaired.

Labor Day DUI Crackdown Resulted in 939 DUI Arrests

The fall DUI enforcement effort that is now underway in Colorado comes on the heels of the Labor Day DUI crackdown, during which 74 law enforcement agencies throughout the state reportedly made 939 DUI arrests. According to CDOT:

  • About 23 percent of these DUI arrests were made by CSP officers.
  • While most of the Labor Day drunk driving arrests were made in Denver, Aurora and Colorado Springs were the other two regions that saw a high number of DUI arrests during this period.

Although 900+ DUI arrests is certainly a substantial number of new DUI cases, it does reflect a nearly 15 percent drop in the number of DUI arrests Colorado law enforcement officials made in 2014 over the same enforcement period (when 1102 DUI arrests were reportedly made).

  • Plan your sober ride ahead of time if you are going somewhere where you will be drinking alcohol.
  • If you have been drinking and don’t know if it’s safe to drive, don’t risk it. Find a ride.
  • If you are stopped by a cop for suspicion of drunk driving, limit what you say and don’t admit to drinking alcohol.
