A – The costs of ignition interlock devices will vary, depending on the vendor you end up choosing. In general, however, ignition interlock devices cost:

  • $75 to $150 to install
  • $60 to $100 to maintain each month.

While there may be some financial aid available for certain people, in general, the convicted people are responsible for covering all costs of ignition interlock devices. What’s more is that, if these people fail to make the necessary payments for these devices and/or fail to get them maintained (i.e., recalibrated) when scheduled:

  • Their service can be discontinued.
  • The vendor can report this to a probation officer and/or the court.
  • Their driving privileges will automatically be suspended again (with the suspension lasting until people get back in compliance).
  • They could be found to be in violation of their DUI probation, leaving them to face some potentially serious consequences in court.

Q – What happens if I fail a breath test via an ignition interlock device?

A – If you fail a breath test via an ignition interlock device, this failed attempt (which will be perceived as an attempt to drive while drunk) will be reported to your probation officer and/or the court. When people get three fails within any consecutive 12-month period:

  • Their driver’s licenses can be suspended.
  • They can have up to one additional year added to their ignition interlock device requirement.
