This past Wednesday, a 25-year-old woman from Northglenn was arrested for an alleged DUI after causing a hit-and-run collision and then driving into a home. According to Longmont police officers overseeing the case, the woman rear-ended a vehicle at around 5:45 pm near East Third Ave. and Pace St. Following this collision, the woman sped off and ended up crashing to a house located on east Fifth Ave.
Upon driving into the house, the brick façade reportedly fell onto the car, trapping the driver, as well as her 5-year-old child and two other adult passengers in the vehicle. While the driver and her son were taken to Longmont United Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, the driver was subsequently arrested and held in custody in the Boulder County Jail until yesterday.
Charges Stemming from the DUI Arrest
Currently, the woman in this case is reportedly facing a range of criminal charges, including (but not necessarily limited to):
- Driving under the influence
- Reckless driving
- Careless driving
- Leaving the scene of an accident.
For each of the above misdemeanor charges, assuming, of course, the woman does not have priors/a criminal history (i.e., each of the above is a first offense), each charge could result in penalties that include up to 1 year in jail and as much as $1,000 in court fines. This means that, if found guilty on all of the above charges, the maximum potential penalties in this case could be up to 4 years in jail/prison and up to $4,000.
Making matters more complicated, this woman has also been charged with:
- Failure to stop or yield
- Reckless endangerment
- Child abuse.
It’s unclear at this time whether any of these charges may ultimately be thrown out, but clearly, this is a serious case that will require a strong defense.
