Over the 2015 Halloween DUI crackdown in Colorado, authorities made 250 drunk driving arrests throughout the state, officials at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced just days ago.

While this is certainly a significant number of arrests to have made over a weekend enforcement period, it does represent a substantial decrease in the number of drunk driving arrests when compared to the numbers from:

  • 2014 when 329 DUI arrests occurred over the Halloween enforcement period
  • 2013 when 427 DUI arrests occurred over this same period of time.

This means that, since 2013, there has been a more than 40 percent drop in the number of DUI arrests law enforcement authorities have made over Halloween weekend.

Background on the 2015 Halloween DUI Arrest Numbers

According to CDOT, this year’s Halloween The Heat Is On campaign was run by the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and 78 local law enforcement agencies, with the agencies that made the most arrests including:

  • Denver PD, which made 50 drunk driving arrests
  • CSP, which made 45 DUI arrests
  • Aurora PD, which made 36 DUI arrests
  • Colorado Springs PD, which made 34 drunk driving arrests.

Authorities’ Reactions to the Drop in 2015 Halloween DUI Arrests

Commenting on the outcome of the 2015 Halloween DUI crackdown, CSP Chief, Colonel Scott Hernandez, stated:

Unfortunately hundreds of drivers got behind the wheel after drinking or using drugs and they are now dealing with the real-life nightmare of a DUI arrest… Thankfully those drivers were removed from our roadways, which enhanced the safety for not only themselves but other motorists on the road over Halloween weekend.

CDOT’s Director Transportation Safety, Darrell Lingk, also commented on this crackdown, explaining that:

[Authorities are] pleased that DUI arrests were down this past Halloween, but there is still a lot of work to be done to reverse the trend of drug and alcohol-related fatalities in Colorado… We will continue to look at ways to educate the public on the dangers of driving impaired and work with law enforcement to ensure our roadways are safe.
